Bonds

Bonds are fixed income instruments which give you a fixed stream of interest payments (known as coupon) and a guaranteed repayment of principal at the maturity. These are issued by various entities including Central Government, state governments, and corporates.

The bonds offered by Central Government are the safest bonds in India and hence have the lowest interest rate or the coupons.

A lot of corporates also issue their bonds to the investors and the coupons are decided by 2 factors:

Safety - Highly safe corporates such as HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries offer lesser coupon rates. While weaker or smaller corporates generally pay higher coupons in return for higher risk. The safety of the corporations is determined by rating agencies with AAA being the safest rating.
Duration - Typically, bonds with longer maturity have higher coupons than a similar bond with lower maturity.

Who should invest in bonds?

People looking to create steady income streams
People looking for safe and fixed returns
People having large sums of money as the bonds have a ticket size of Rs.10 Lacs in most cases.

Taxation - The coupon received from the bonds is taxable at slab rate. The capital gain on the bonds is dependent on whether the bond is listed or unlisted.

Type of bond Short term capital gain Long term capital gain
Listed bonds Slab rate for < 12 months 10% without indexation > 12 months
Unlisted bonds Slab rate < 36 months 20% without indexation > 36 months
